For our latest edition of Custom Spotlight, we teamed up with a true creative powerhouse: Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA. Known for its massive galleries, daring exhibits, and next-level art experiences, this museum is anything but ordinary.
Naturally, we were thrilled to collaborate on a custom Maptote collection that’s just as bold.
We caught up with Phyllis Criddle, Mass MoCA’s retail buyer, for a quick Q+A about what it was like designing a collection that reflects the museum’s vibrant spirit—and the local charm of the Berkshires.
Please tell us a bit about Mass MoCA's Gift Shop.
The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) is one of the world's liveliest centers for making and enjoying today's most evocative art. How did you find Maptote?
Michael Berick, Maptote's co-founder, reached out to me via email after visiting the museum.
Can you describe how the design process was for you?
The design process was great! I took many photos of the complex and sent them to Maptote, and then we went back and forth making tweaks until the design was perfect. It was wonderful to see the museum complex and artworks depicted in the whimsical Maptote style.
