We’re so excited to share this Custom Spotlight!
We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Barnard College, and it’s been such a wonderful partnership.
Inspired by Barnard’s vibrant campus community, rich history, and iconic New York City setting, we were thrilled to create a custom design collection that celebrates the spirit of the college.
We spoke with Brian Wexler-Rubinstein from Barnard about the custom design process, the inspiration behind the collaboration, and some of his favorite Maptote pieces.
Maptote: Please tell us a bit about Barnard and the college store.
Brian Wexler-Rubinstein (BW): The Barnard College Store operates much like a boutique, offering apparel and merchandise carefully tailored to our unique community of students, alumni, parents, and prospective students. Our inventory is deeply influenced by these groups, and we strive to create unique, personal pieces that reflect the Barnard spirit.
Maptote: How did you find Maptote? Why did you choose us?
BW: While the partnership began before my time here, I believe we originally chose Maptote because of your commitment to high-quality, locally made products. Supporting local craftsmanship aligns well with our values.

Maptote: Can you describe how the design process was for you? What was your favorite thing about working with us?
BW: The design process is incredibly seamless. Typically, we come up with a concept or spot a new product trend and bring those ideas to the Maptote team. From there, we work together to select the colors and artwork to bring the vision to life. The turnaround times for artwork are quick, which makes planning our seasonal items much easier. My favorite part of the partnership is the personal connection, getting to see the team at the NY NOW show, discussing ideas in person, and seeing the new items first hand is always a highlight.
Maptote: Favorite Maptote Custom item and why.
BW: Right now, we are obsessed with the mini tote charms. They are absolutely adorable and perfectly on-trend.
